The Benefits of an Outdoor Cake Smash

We held Amariah’s Outdoor Cake Smash at Wat Tyler Country Park in Basildon, Essex. I particularly enjoyed this session as it was the first time I’d shot a cake smash outdoors. The weather was perfect that day, and the family looked stunning!

As it was summertime, going outdoors for this photoshoot was particularly beneficial due to the need for social distancing. It was truly refreshing to be able to pick up my camera again and provide this family with memories of their gorgeous little one’s first birthday cake smash after months of lockdown. The open space of Wat Tyler Park not only provided a beautiful backdrop but ensured a safe environment.

Styling an Outdoor Session for Maximum Impact

Amariah’s session was full of colour and inspiration, and I thoroughly enjoyed taking and editing these images. Even though baby Amariah was not entirely "feelin" the shoot at first, she still rocked it! The key to success with any baby photography session is patience and adaptability, which often pays off with those beautiful, genuine expressions.

  • Natural Lighting: Shooting outdoors provides the most beautiful, natural light. We utilized the soft light of the park setting, ensuring flattering illumination that made the colours of her setup truly pop.
  • The Setup: Her gallery, as you can see, was full of colour and inspiration. We used a simple, effective cake smash setup that was easy to transport and quick to assemble in the park. This minimalism ensures the focus remains on the baby and the beautiful backdrop of Wat Tyler Park.
  • Public Engagement: We were thrilled that the passing public in the park had to stop and comment on how beautiful Amariah looked in her little cake smash setup! This speaks volumes about the unique and eye-catching nature of an outdoor cake smash in Essex.
