A Modern Two-Day London Story: From Woolwich Town Hall to an Intimate Home Marquee


There is something incredibly special about a wedding that refuses to fit into a standard mold. When Kafai and Melissa reached out to book me for their two-day celebration in London, I knew we were going to capture something magical. Instead of rushing through a single, hectic day, they split their wedding into two distinct chapters, allowing every single moment room to breathe.

Day One: The Civil Ceremony & Paced Portraits from Woolwich to Greenwich


Our journey began at the iconic Woolwich Town Hall, easily one of the most magnificent civic buildings in London. As a photographer, walking into that grand Victoria Hall with its sweeping staircases and intricate stained glass is always an inspiration.

Melissa and Kafai's ceremony was intimate, emotional, and filled with quiet, shared glances. With a very tight timeline on the day, we had to work quickly and efficiently. I immediately optimized our limited time inside the Town Hall, utilizing the spectacular grand staircase to capture all of their key family group photos, before heading outside for a classic, high-energy confetti exit on the steps.

Rather than trying to rush their couple portraits inside a crowded hall, we decided to break away to the beautiful, rolling grounds of Greenwich Park. This was the perfect pivot. The sprawling greenery, historic backdrops, and open light of Greenwich allowed Kafai and Melissa a quiet moment to catch their breath as newlyweds, while I captured romantic, natural, and editorial portraits that felt completely relaxed—proving that even with a constrained timeline, you never have to compromise on beautiful portraits.

Day Two: Gatecrashing Games, Traditional Tea Ceremonies & A Backyard Marquee Party

The second day kicked off with an absolute explosion of energy and laughter for a traditional Chinese gatecrashing ceremony. Before Kafai could claim his bride, Melissa’s bridesmaids and family set up a series of hilarious, high-stakes games and challenges at the house that the groom and his groomsmen had to complete. As a documentary wedding photographer, these are the moments I live for capturing the raw panic, teamwork, and absolute joy on the guys' faces as they fought their way through the door.

Once Kafai successfully "crashed the gate," the mood beautifully transitioned as we headed over to the parents' home for the traditional Chinese tea ceremony. This formal honoring of elders and heritage is incredibly intimate and emotional, providing a stunning contrast to the wild energy of the morning games.

Following the traditions, the celebration moved out into the garden. The family had completely transformed their backyard with a stunningly decorated marquee, complete with full catering services. Surrounded by beautifully styled decor, fairy lights, and their closest friends, the atmosphere was completely relaxed. We captured raw, candid moments of laughter, toasts, and delicious food as the sun went down over London.

By breaking the rules of a traditional 12-hour wedding day, they got the best of both worlds: high-end, town hall portraits on Thursday, and a laid-back, emotional garden party on Saturday.
