As a photographer, I am constantly refining my style. In years past, I approached the holidays with a grand scale:

  • The Outdoor Approach (e.g., 2015): My sets were done outdoors in a big field, incorporating lots of oversized props, wrapped gift boxes, and natural elements like winter wreaths. This created a highly rustic, busy, and vibrant look, perfect for a maximalist holiday feel.

By 2016, however, my creative direction shifted. Christmas preparations started early at the studio, and I decided to move the sessions entirely indoors. The goal was a more simple and timeless approach to my setup, color palette, and props. This studio style offered several benefits:

  • Consistent Lighting: Eliminates reliance on unpredictable Essex winter weather.
  • Classic Look: Using simple backdrops and muted colors ensures the photos remain elegant for years.
  • Focus on the Child: Simple props ensure the baby's expression, rather than the backdrop, is the true star.

Whether your photographer chooses an indoor or outdoor backdrop, here are timeless tips for achieving the best festive portraits:

  1. Wardrobe is Key: Opt for classic holiday colors (cream, burgundy, forest green, plaid) instead of outfits with busy logos or overly trendy graphics. Soft knit textures and simple bows photograph beautifully.
